This morning I woke up with the healthiest of intentions – it was time to head back to the gym and get some kind of exercise routine going again.
So after my first cup of tea, and to help get me motivated, I made a simple blueberry smoothie filled with blueberries I had in the freezer, Greek yoghurt, banana and a hint of vanilla (because I love vanilla).
I don’t often have smoothies but every now and then, when I’m on a health kick, I make them and wonder why I don’t do it more often.
Blueberries, although in season now, are so conveniently available in frozen bags in most supermarkets. I always keep a bag in the freezer for convenience. I’ve often whipped up a sauce, dessert or even jam using this versatile frozen fruit. Not that I don’t buy fresh blueberries. I do occasionally, but while the temperatures in Dubai soar, fresh and crispy fruit and vegetables become, somewhat softer, and less appealing or don’t last longer than a day or two after purchase.
Blueberries have long been known as a natural source of antioxidants, vitamin C, and fiber. Combined with yoghurt (a natural probiotic), and banana (for energy), and you have a morning superpower-smoothie.
Now I’m ready to hit the gym…
Makes 1 glass / 250ml
1 large banana, thickly sliced
½ cup blueberries, fresh or frozen
½ cup Greek yoghurt
1 tsp vanilla essence (optional)
Toss everything into a blender and blend until smooth.
