Chocolate yoghurt ice lollies


My childhood memories of long hot South African summers are filled with smokey braai’s (barbeque), crisp Greek village salads and creamy ice cream. These are still some of my favourite things to eat and I love that my children get to taste and enjoy all of these and more. Without a doubt the one ingredient they love the most is chocolate. Anything chocolate. It’s quite addictive, and so is the sugar rush that follows.

While I don’t believe in restricting sugar completely from my children’s diet, they do eat a balanced diet of mostly healthy whole foods (80/20 rule!). These dreamy chocolate ice lollies are made with full-fat organic Greek yoghurt which makes them not only healthier, but creamy and a little tangy. Greek yoghurt is higher in protein and lower in sugar content than regular yoghurt. They also make for a healthy after school treat.

For a dairy free option, substitute Greek yoghurt with plain unsweetened coconut yoghurt.


Makes approx. 6

500ml Greek Yoghurt

2 tablespoons raw cacao powder

2 tablespoons honey, to taste

1 teaspoon vanilla essence

  1. Place all the ingredients into a blender and mix for a few seconds until combined.

  2. Pour the mixture into ice lolly moulds. The number of ice lollies you make depends on the size of the moulds.

  3. Place in the freezer for at least one hour or until completely frozen.
